family project, labor of love, releasing it for free. that doesn’t matter until after the fact. if it is still in development the copywrite holders basically have to stop you to protect their intellectual property.

Fan art is legally a murky area. Most copyright holders don’t bother squashing it because they’ve learned that fan engagement via that sort of derivative work is a brand positive, and it still costs them money to pay lawyers to police it.

He never said he was releasing it.  It's a family project with his kids.  You're allowed to make fan art.
