Wasn't there something with that system though that made it difficult or undesirable? I recall people talking about it during the Vietnam years, but I cannot recall why people were not able to use it and have the service accepted by the government.

yeah my pops worked in a state mental institution (healthcare) instead of going to viet nam.

Wasn’t it difficult to be classified as a “conscientious objector”, though? I thought you had to be a committed pacifist under all circumstances, and if you supported war against the Nazis, for instance, then you couldn’t claim to be a conscientious objector for Korea or Vietnam.

There’s a stigma attached to CO status, though. It’s often viewed as the last resort of people who are too selfish, too cowardly, or too unpatriotic to go and fight.

I would weep tears of joy if we could pass a law limiting the length of primary and general election campaigns. It’s too much. TOO MUCH. TOO MUCH TIME. TOO MUCH ELECTION FATIGUE.
