They’re not allowed to go on this long in most countries. Most places, candidates have 6-8 weeks to campaign before the election.
I can’t think of any other democracy where elections go on this long. There’s nothing about democratic principles that require us to go on this long forever and ever.
An Australian election was called for early June a couple of weeks ago and everyone here is horrified about how long the campaign will be.
Colombiana? Unfortunately it bombed, but I don’t think that was her fault.
The afro-centric paradigm is one of exoticism in the most sexualized form. This is why there are more raped and murders of African females in cinema than caucasians. The black female is disposable according to Hollywood.
It makes me sad as a white person to admit how much this is true. It’s not right, and it’s not fair. Even those of us who don’t agree with point a know how much that attitude brings about points b and c.
I agree with all you wrote, but want to comment on the Bond issue. I absolutely do not understand why Elba is not cast as Bond. He embodies suave good looks and oozes charm and grace, with a twist of self-deprecating humour to make it oh-so-smooth. “Women love him and men want to be him”- ignoring the inherent…
I’m with you on this one. It isn’t so much the fact that they are given these roles that are motion capture or that require a lot of makeup, it is that they aren’t given as many roles that just allow them to be black. In contrast to the white actors who seem to get a decent balance between those two types of roles.
I think the larger issues that make “recoloring” black actors more problematic is that there are relatively none or few in these films to whom such does not happen, while there are plenty of white actors who aren’t “recolored” in the same films. There’s Quill and many other white characters in Guardians; there are…
I learned today that a traditionally white character in Dr. Strange was cast as Chiwetel Ejiofor. I am really glad they didn’t do Tilda Swinton in yellow face-that character was such a racist trope anyways and perpetuates so much bullshit as it is.
There’s a part of me that’s glad the primaries take so long — it gives the candidates time to spend in each state (and familiarize themselves with the communities’ needs/listen to residents/contribute to local economies/build relationships with downticket candidates), and it allows non-household name candidates some…
Agreed. If anything, I would argue that it’s a detriment to the democratic process as our politicians are in a perpetual state of running for reelection. They never seem able or willing to make the hard choices as they’re worried about losing their positions. Both sides are definitely guilty of this.
Right? I love the idea of concetrated primaries and shorter campaign seasons. There’s no reason this has to take a year.
It’s because a) we as black people are not human in any way shape or form palatable to people who are not of sub saharan descent, especially “white” people b) white people will complain and maybe not see your movie if they have to view us...or at least if they have seen us “around” a critical mass of movies and c) we…
Agreed. When we had our election last year in Canada, it was one of the longest in our history, but it was only 78 days. There’s no reason for elections to last for so long in the U.S.
I would love to see time limits and spending caps for election cycles. They go on too long and they’re waaaay too costly. I’d also love term limits so that politicians weren’t constantly in campaign mode (instead of doing their actual job of governing).
It’s the right thing for him to do either way. He doesn’t have a path to the general, and this way these staffers can apply for jobs with other candidates now instead of waiting until those positions are filled.
