I came to the conclusion that I'm basically Buddhist years ago after reading The Tao of Pooh but I just can't bring myself to buy into the whole re-incarnation thing. I think we're arguing the same side of this point. Charlie Jane (I think) and I are of the opinion that most self-help books don't extend beyond one's own particular bag of meat*. If they did I agree with you that this would be a happier world.
I think you may have hit another nail on the head there, Charlie Jane. We're a nation of "self-helpers" but most of the advice is how to get yours and get ahead. Which doesn't lead to optimism or happiness, it leads to looking out for oneself and paranoia towards those that would take it from you.
