I thougjt her getting away with more was a parallel to the cracks in Gilead’s power being shown. It's been pretty consistent that she has some level of power over the Waterfords and then the new Commander wanted Gilead brought down. Seems more like story progression than going off the rails.

I’d say the innovative part is using a hot property with proper funding of production . And timing.
