People who want a handheld indie machine likely already have a Switch.

Hi. I'm a lawyer (so I can afford some luxury items) and because I have a young kid and a wife to share the TV screen with, I have been dying for a solution like this for a long time, so I can play modern games sitting on the couch staring at a smaller screen.

Fuck walled gardens. My greatest hope for this handheld is that it disrupts the shit out of the market.

OMG yes. But also a toggle for "There's a 6yo literally climbing on me while I'm playing."

The BEST part is that the same nerds crying about how “Game Journalists can’t play games” all cite the exact same like, *four* examples and that’s it. Every time. It’s all they have.

The Final Fantasy ports have triple speed and an invincibility button. I had 100 spare hours to play a game like that when I had a summer vacation. I don’t get those anymore. So having that option is probably the only chance I have of playing these games again.

Look. Some of us are old now. Those 12+ hour marathons are 20 years in the past. I try that now and all I’m going to accomplish is a blood clot. And folks can snicker, but their day will come. Eventually you won’t give a shit about learning the timing of phase 3 of whatever boss fight you’re stuck at.  You’re going to

Thanks for clearing that up. I though he actually had super powers.

Completely agree with this. Nintendo doesn’t need a Switch with PS5/Series X hardware but sooner or later they’re going to need to release an upgrade, whether a “mid-gen” update or a full successor, where 1080p/30fps (and ideally 1080p/60fps) isn’t an issue. Maybe something comparable to a Series S but targeting lower

Ya’ll speaking to my soul. 1080p60 from a handheld would have been baller. I skipped Breath of the Wild because I couldn’t handle the framerate issues. I hear Age of Calamity is even worse. I also think that 4K isn’t feasable from a handheld. Maybe with DLSS fuckery or another form of up-scaling.

There’s a difference between not doing 4K and ordering 7-inch OLED panels from Samsung in a resolution they haven’t make OLEDs in for almost a decade.

Yeah, I agree with this. One of the main reasons I was hoping for a Switch Pro wasn’t necessarily 4k output, but the technical strength to make 1080p @30fps the stable benchmark across the board, with possibility for 60fps depending on the game. The Switch, in its current state, has trouble running current-gen games

It doesn’t need 4k but when even first party games can’t even do 1080p 30fps, maybe a little boost just to get stable framerate would have been really appreciated.

I’m still sour that a remaster of a Wii game (not WiiU, a Wii game) is still only 720p docked with an unstable framerate. (yes I’m talking about Xenoblade

The only two weird things about this announcement for me are:

People are anticipating 4k with tensor cores from Nvidia. Which is probably around the corner. They already have mobile-like chips utilizing tensor cores. The problem is TDP, but they’re also not exactly trying very hard to hit it.

Disney changed the conditions of the deal on them. Because EA had been underperforming on the Star Wars front for some time.

It’s not going to end well for him, will it? This is one of those sad situations where you know they’re racing for the cliff, and all you can do is stay clear.”

Dire story. Upshot is that I never expected Steve O to be a lucid voice of reason.

I think “Yeah, we’re not ready to show it yet” is perfectly fine. Everyone understands that.

I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They’re not much bigger than two meters.
