It wasn’t settled law.  It was interpretations of previous SCOTUS rulings.  Interpretations that SCOTUS has now said are incorrect.  Still not a dangerous precedent.  If there is no cause for entry (non-violent misdemeanor with no exigent circumstances), then there is also no cause to use the pit maneuver.
