I think also there’s this strange presumption that sex is something that everyone is just going to be good at without any communication, training or practice. When, just statistically, half of us are below-average at it.
I honestly think the monogamy—-polyamory spectrum is just as much part of how we’re individually wired. You shouldn’t have to explain why you’re monogamous any more than you should explain why you’re gay or straight or whatever. It’s just who you are.
We’re meant to believe that Nicholas had a singular vision for understanding what the timeline changes would do and how to work them to his goal. Whether you can suspend that disbelief, I can’t decide that for you.

Part of why I get a little irritated when people lump it in with other “canceled too soon” shows that were ill-treated by their network. AD got plenty of chance to find its audience, and maybe more than it necessarily deserved.
