“Don’t drink the kool-aid” doesn’t refer to the drink tasting bad. It’s a way of saying don’t mindlessly follow the crowd. It comes from the Jonestown murder-suicides, where a lot of people killed themselves by drinking poisoned kool-aid.

I loosely followed a recipe from allrecipes.com but it’s pretty much the same thing. Carrots, butter, brown sugar, whiskey.
