That’s really something isn’t it? Imagine if you’d had a really shitty day or a different policy or whatever and declined his request. Goes to show you how little kindnesses, little courtesies, generally just doing what you can instead of figuring out why you can’t, have a real significance in life. Awesome story.

“He got his meal to go ... and then he went.”

..I didn’t know where that was going and am still in awe of where it went.

He died happy, at least, and didn’t take anyone else out on his way. You made his last moments enjoyable ones and should be proud.

Agreed. The people behind these scams deserve every bit of punishment they get.

I’d like to extend this mentality to the greater populace of decision-makers.

...there should be laws to stop someone from unfairly cheating someone else just because they’re smarter.

I could not agree more with your comment. Anyone who disagrees needs to be put on a watch list.

I do believe in “buyer beware”... but this is legitimate fraud. Sure, you should always demand to see the contract you are signing, but this was an intentional deception.

Eh. It’s not like it’s either or.

“I already know Jalopnik is home to a lot of “buyer beware” people who think anyone who isn’t as smart as they are is fair game for exploitation, but honestly that is wrong and you should feel bad for thinking it.”

Our current administration is draining the swamp by rolling back regulations on payday lenders, rolling back regulations on financial advisors fiduciary reposnsibility to their clients (literally saying that we want the right to bilk our clients instead of looking out for them which they actually pay us to do),

What these dealers and lenders are doing is nothing short of predatory.

Let me play devil’s advocate on this one.

People are too judgmental.

White collar crime in general is not investigated, enforced, or disciplined as much as it should.

Any system where the person selling you a product or service gets money in return for the sale, it creates a predatory market.

The problem is, people have a known cognitive bias toward blaming victims. By blaming victims, we tend to reinforce the idea that we are superior, that we would never have made similar mistakes.

I already know it’s going to come up, but just because you’re more conniving and underhanded than the average individual, and you’re willing to take advantage of someone not as clever or thorough or as smart as you does not mean it’s OKAY to take advantage of people. Just like there should be laws to stop strong

Until your kid can use knife and fork and sit quietly through a meal, they stay at home.
