They probably meant Geo Metros, which were rebadged Suzukis.  Not the nicest car by any means, but I had one during college that got 40+mpg.  Since I had a one hour commute (one way, so two hours a day), I was very happy with that car.  Also could park it in all kinds of spaces most people couldn’t fit into.
