Jesus Christ, it’s like you reached into my head and pulled out everything I was thinking, only said it better. I’ve tried going to a couple therapists, and it’s never worked for me. I know they don’t all suck; I just hit bad luck a couple times: one was way too new and unsure of herself; one kept trying to make me do

Thanks for your support! I pretty much never post here and I was afraid to, but I’m glad I did. Feels good to get this off my chest.

Haha I know! It made me feel worse to make a list of all the ways I think wrong and be forced to pretend I am learning to think right.

Unpopular opinion, but therapists always seem put their own pride and feelings of self satisfaction before the humanity of their patients. They think that their not being frustrated and not being called a shrink is more important than building trust and having empathy.

Yes! Most are not good. Even if they’re good, it sucks if you don’t have a good vibe with them. Even if they are good and you have a good vibe, you may not actually get any improvement out of it (that was true for me). If someone still has the motivation to try, I think the answer is to explore types you haven’t tried

I found CBT to be totally overwhelming. When you go to therapy with feelings of inadequacy, being overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed out, being given homework on top of that just makes everything worse. Also recently read that anyone on the spectrum likely won’t react well to CBT, which makes absolute sense to me.

I see nothing in her letter signifying that she believes “the work needs to be done by the therapist.” But anyway, it’s not wrong for her to expect results from therapy. It’s really convenient to claim that whenever therapy doesn’t work, it’s because the patient didn’t put in the effort/work. But really, sometimes it

I admit I’m not a fan of Jane Marie personally (not since the reactions to her articles about flying with her daughter or trying to get a neck tattoo), so I’m biased, but I have to agree with you here. This was really not very good advice.

Totally depends on what typeof person you are. I hated CBT. I already knew exactly what those worksheets and books would tell me were “wrong thoughts” and “right thoughts” and hated torturing myself with those kinds of lessons. If any of the above apply to you I would not recommend CBT: analytical, overthinker,

I really relate to the second letter writer. I have been in therapy for yearsss, with several different therapists, and it is daunting and frustrating to try to find a new one. I have gotten the best results by being very upfront about my needs (are they going to blame my depression/anxiety on my being polyamorous,

The response to the first email is incredibly insensitive. As someone who has been through the very thing that the writer describes - there is a period where you feel extremely angry as the victim that you are stuck with all the therapy, recovery, mess from an abusive relationship and the actual abuser gets to

“hey if you have anything, anything at all for me that would be great.”

Yeah, that may work out as far as getting a sales lead or two, but these are world leaders. You can’t use pathetic whining to get world leaders to give you everything you want because they feel bad for you, particularly when they’re well aware

They voted for a guy who shits on people they hate.

He does not know how to negotiate. At all. It’s absurdly (terrifyingly? sublimely?) funny.

Right? His followers are so invested in the macho man figure they think he cuts, but he’s just a sniveling little turd.

I’m pretty sure no one was saying that the poem on the Statue of Liberty is a law, dipshit.

This reminds me of when I was watching The Handmaids Tale and about halfway through like, the second episode I thought ‘There are literally millions of Americans who would watch this and see nothing wrong. Pat Robertson is probably masturbating to it right now.’

Paul Ryan just came while reading that.

He meant “woman over 25 who doesn’t give me a chubby (that I will admit)“.

Maybe lice aren’t a big deal if you’ve got a couple of young boys with short hair. My younger daughter, who has ultra-thick mid-back-length hair, picked up lice a few years back, and it was HELL treating her. It took literally 4-5 hours to go through her hair. Multiple times. But by all means, C’lay, tell us at length
