These kind of tariffs have historically either not worked at all, or they’ve backfired horribly. The chicken tax was a similar move against the VW T2, put in place by demand of the UAW because they knew American light trucks couldn’t compete. Flash forward several decades and now every pickup truck is enormous because

Oh I can’t wait for all the “we road rear facing as kids in xyz old car, back in the ancient past and survived” survivor bias stuff in the comments.

Ope.

Because the law says you are responsible for slowing down and ensuring you don’t hit someone in front of you. In the case of the moron that went across both lanes and turned back toward the Waymo, an investigation into a collision would have laid charges against the idiot on the uniwheel.

like all cyclists

“Slow down” not on the menu? I suppose that’d to be expected if you train the AI model on US driving.

“Per the company, the cab “detected that there may be a risk of a person within that crowd who had fallen down, and decided to carefully initiate a passing maneuver when the opposing lane was clear to move around what could be an obstacle and a safety concern.””

It’s not even AI, I don’t know why people keep calling it that. It’s plate recognition software. A video clip or photo is captured and assigned to the plate, this is cross referenced with a database from the DMV and a letter is sent to the registered address with a fine.

Honestly, the dude needs life in prison w/o parole or death penalty.

I like how these folks want all the perks of a governed society but none of the responsibilities. Isn’t there a patch of desert or tundra or a vacant Island we could move them to so they could be free.

Meanwhile, certain folks in Congress are trying like hell to get Chinese EV import banned.

A few important and relevant notes on this for context:

This is telling us the early-adopter era of EVs is pretty much over, and the next batch of consumers isn’t so sure about the tech

Can we stop it with these constant inflammatory stories?  Is someone from ALEC or some other oil company sponsored think tank writing them?  You’re creating FUD.

not pumping billions into All-Electric like other manufacturers

Hybrids are great, but you do realize that you can make EVs without Cobalt? Lack of raw materials isn’t going to be what holds EVs back.

51 mpg for 232 hp is damn impressive. Actually it makes my eyes water a little when I think about ‘97 GT Mustang having only 215 HP and averaging 15 mpg in the city. I’ll be curious to see if this, and the new Prius Prime with its 220 hp, ever get TRD specs.

4th gear, hasn’t this been a thing for a while now?? I remember reading about old EV batteries being used for home power packs years ago.

And your house’s square footage is...?

And the average British home’s is...?

My favorite story about these guys: The FL attorney that pushed FL to repeal its helmet law died in a motorcycle crash. And it wasn’t even someone else’s fault; he lost control of the bike while slowing down.
