I have zero problem with that context. I’m taking issue with Gunn acting like it was a huge revelation at the end of writing as opposed to WBD likely saying “Hey, we want it to be clear this is the first and not a sequel.” 

The first thing that pops into my head when Richard Lewis is mentioned is him saying “It’s a good change. That’s a good change.”

There are plenty of issues with the final season of GoT, but anyone who thinks that the broadstrokes weren’t exactly what GRRM was always planning, you are kidding yourself.
