That’s an excellent way to describe it. There are so many shows from the past twenty years (like, say, Breaking Bad and The Wire) where I could deeply appreciate them on a literary and artistic level, but I had absolutely no emotional connection to the characters or the show as a whole. I was the same way with Mad Men

Hmm. Now I’m curious. I auto-downloaded this week’s episode of The Good Place: The Podcast (William Jackson Harper is the guest!), but I only got to listen to about 10 minutes before arriving at work this morning. The show notes say, “[Eric Kissack, the editor who’s also guesting] reveals a great Easter egg from

A few years ago, my sister invited some friends to our big family meal. They were recent transfers from England, and this was their first American Thanksgiving. They were kind of amazed by everything, but they were absolutely astonished — and delighted — by green bean casserole.

As I become An Old, I appreciate these jokes more and more. Thank you so very much.

I think it’s also laziness. I’ve heard “THE Ukraine” in multiple progressive places like, say, Maddow’s show (though not by RM herself) and the Crooked Media podcasts. The other day, someone on a podcast kept using “Nunes” with the tilde — “Noon-yezz” — instead of how Devin himself pronounces it, as “Noon-ezz”, even

Thank you for this! I’ve seen so many people -- including diplomats who should know better -- using “The” in front of “Ukraine”, and it drives me crazy!

Hello, Shannon! As a high school English teacher, I have a very important question: will this be appropriate to show my students? (I got burned several years ago when I saw that ‘90s version of The Scarlet Letter on Prime Video, then started showing it to my students before discovering it has freakin’ full frontal.

To be honest, I saw the headline and was expecting more saltiness -- the equivalent of a smack upside the head. It was good advice, though! Can’t complain!

Wow, really? I’ve never had mine confiscated, and I’ve brought some sharp-ass steel#1 sock needles.

Last weekend I flew Frontier, which charges for everything, including carry-ons. Maybe I’m naive, but I was astonished by how empty the overhead bins were, now that folks had to pay $40 for their roller bags. (As someone who DID pay her forty bucks, I was quite annoyed by the flight attendants who didn’t seem to give

I know it’s not the same, but my first reaction was this is what GNR would use in a remake music video of November Rain.

Heh. A friend of mine is due in December, and they’re not even going to find out the sex in advance. They’re also not telling anyone else the names they’ve chosen. It’s just so.... so quaint! (And I absolutely love it. I don’t have or want kids, but I’m totally on my friends’ side in this.)

I’ll hear your unpopular opinion, and raise you.... I didn’t like Helena. (Eek! I actually said it aloud!) I would’ve adored the hell out of her goth-twee combo back when I was 24, but now I have no patience for it.

That’s kinda where I see Brent, as well. His HR joke was funny, but it’s exactly the kind of joke I would expect the writers to use with a character like him. He’s just... such a trope

Ooh, I am so excited for you! Another tip: the first season can take a bit of getting-used-to. She can be abrasive, crude, unlikable, and a very unreliable narrator. Hang in there, though -- SO worth it.

I just found out that the Radiolab guys are doing a multipart podcast in November titled “Dolly Parton’s America”. WOW.

I stole this from someone else months ago, but S1 is about breaking Fleabag down. S2 is about building her back up.
