Where his wife fought off his advances but he had sex with her regardless.

Abso-fucking-lutely. This is a great example to throw at douche canoes who insist there's no such thing as rape culture. Because guess what—sometimes rape isn't a scary guy in a hoodie grabbing a woman off the street. Sometimes it's a husband and wife on a God damned morning talk show giggling about how she sometimes

There was a wonderful T-shirt/poster that used to be more common listing things like:

And THIS, once again, is why boys need to be taught from a young age what rape is.

I like the term "enthusiastic consent"

You have no idea how upset I am at my Danish ancestors for moving here. I could have lived in Copenhagen and had the best life ever, great-great-great-great grandma Christina!!!!

Yes, but I'm not eating any of their weird preserved fishes!

Don't be sorry! I'd be in another country if I could.

We understand. We're also a bit envious.

You are so very right. My Brazilian grand mother has ALWAYS told us - the granddaughters- "the best husband you can have, is your job." Meaning that you should always strive to be independent and not "needing a man" to get by. That has stuck with me so much.

I once talked to a man who'd worked for the Red Cross and United Nations all his life, and he said that the best way to help a community is to go through the women, because things that benefit them will benefit all the people in their lives. He said (and this is a generalization, but I'm just quoting) that going

The additional challenge is that she lives in a community so oppressive that women are basically not allowed outside the home - so it's not surprising she can't even understand the relative freedom the victim had, and there essentially are no jobs she could possibly work without leaving her community - a daunting task

This is perfect. Well said.

That was my reaction at first, but then I realized from the whole article that her comment can't be compared to westernized slut shaming. It becomes pretty clear that she literally does not understand how a women is out alone at night in the same way that I do not understand, say, particle physics. I've heard of it

I bet you she will also have people blaming her for the rape because she wasn't a good enough wife.
I could be wrong but people thinking things like that could stop a lot of charity.
Another reason to educate girls.

It's a trite quote, but it comes down to, "only the educated are truly free."

Absolutely.

There are hundreds of these kinds of stories out of India thanks to pay inequality and a reliance on traditional breadwinner roles.

Isn't that what everyone does, throws them in the little trash can?! I am always leery of anything that is supposed to be "flushable." I think it was too many years of growing up in a house with a septic system and having to have the "poop sucker truck" come visit, which was always horrifying.

Exactly! That's how I use these wipes (and I do use them)
