I am a Canadian by birth, currently living in North Carolina. When we moved here, I found the following, said by high school teachers, to be strange to my Canadian ears:

Everything handed in is typed on a computer now, and they want to spend the time on other things, probably related to mandatory testing. Cursive is not something that is tested.

I had to learn how to use a slide rule in math (approx. 1977), before they let us use calculators. I don't remember how to use one now. They weren't sure this calculator thing was going to be a good idea, so we had to learn the old way as well.

I had a part-time job at the town library when I was in high school in the late 1970s. I still remember enough of the Dewey Decimal system to find books in the non-fiction section without having to look them up. (Unless, of course, they are using the Library of Congress system).

In high school in the 1970's (maybe 1977?) I took a computer programming course. We used bubble cards to program in Fortran. I think each card could hold about 10 different characters. We didn't even have the computer at school - our teacher had to drive the cards to the board office every night to run them, then

OK, I am old and I don't know who Amy Schumer is, but this made me laugh out loud. I hope the movie is as funny as the preview.

I think that you when state that they are "all horribly written crap" you are being overly critical and that you have not actually read any of the books that are being mentioned in this thread as good romantic fiction. Take a chance and try something new. There are a number of blogs that do a great job reviewing and

I have not read Fifty Shades of Grey (mainly because I heard how badly written it is, and that it started as Twilight fan fiction), but a romance book blogger I respect went to the Fifty Shades movie premiere last week, and she liked it, even though she didn't like the book. So, there is hope that maybe the movie is

Yeah, I really love Cherise Sinclair's Master of the Shadowlands series.

I believe Larry Ellison (Oracle Software creator, America's Cup boat owner, airplane aficionado, and general asshole) once tried to buy a Russian MiG, but US customs wouldn't let him bring it into the country.

In the early 1990's (yes, I am old), my husband & I rode down an elevator in the Pierre Hotel in NYC with Brent Spiner (Data, from Star Trek TNG). He was wearing sunglasses and was obviously trying very hard not to be recognized. The hilarious part is that a bunch of old ladies then got on the elevator, and they had

Fellow Canadian who has also lived in Florida, now living in North Carolina. When we moved to Florida, I couldn't get over the fact that all the houses had single pane windows - definitely wouldn't stay really warm. Then, when my son was in elementary school, if the temperature got below 50 degrees F in the morning,

When this book opens, you start reading, and you wonder if you have the correct book in the series. I don't want to spoil anything for people watching the TV show and haven't read this book yet, but you wonder what the heck happened. I will be interested to see how they choose to adapt this.

We have cable, but I am not sure for how much longer - we basically watch Netflix. I should say, my husband and I watch Netflix. My 23 year old son never watches TV. I think the US network TV model is dying. Even on Netflix, we would rather watch TV shows of about 12 or 13 episodes a season - British TV, FX, HBO

I did it for a year, 30 years ago. It was my first job when I graduated. I am sure things have changed a lot since then. I never liked doing it, but it was part of the job. I also ran the lab of the prof I worked for, and would have to do the ordering for what the grad students needed. I remember you could order

Keep reading. My favorite books are 3 and 4 (2 is good too!). You haven't even met some of the best characters in the series yet.

Apparently Sam Heughan did play Batman in a stage show, so maybe you are correct!

That was from the AskOutlander thing on Twitter last week. I kind of assumed they were joking, as there were lots of other funny things said. I think the Outlander Starz twitter feed has a summary of all of the questions and answers.
