I think what's being missed here is that the main thrust of my argument is that Amherst did nothing wrong - nothing "shameworthy" or "takedown-worthy" by sending the email it did to their RAs. There's no shaming, no victim blaming, nothing to see here, really.

I'm not sure why this keeps getting ignored, so I'll reiterate though I suspect it's fruitless; this memo wasn't sent to the student body or to the entire Amherst mailing list, it was sent to RA's. To the ones who ARE trained in how to handle a potentially dangerous situation for their residents.

You still haven't explained WHY "Don't rape people" is obvious and doesn't need to be stated b/c as a society we have already determined this is bad and wrong (even despite clear evidence to the contrary — see, e.g., Stuebenville, Maryville, community and media reactions regarding same) but "Don't get raped" is NOT

I'm not arguing the point that it's so obvious it doesn't need to be stated - I am stating that it is so obvious it doesn't need to be stated. There is nothing that needs to be argued for. It does not need to be stated that you do not come to the campus and assault anyone. It does not need to be stated. You do NOT

Totally valid points about changing the social expectations through constant heightened discourse.

I would hope by now you know you're preaching to the choir and it's exhausting, but I'll indulge you and play. For the most part, there are conversations we don't have to have, or expect to have to have.

See my reply to Rooo, directly below your comment.

This is a memo to RA's, probably from a Student Life Coordinator (or whatever the equivalent), telling them to keep an eye out. That's all it is - that it is not also a sweeping statement about rape culture does not make it wrong.

But what you're arguing is that this is bad because the other would be better. And of course it would be better. But this "takedown?" This is just click-baiting.

There's no "don't rape" part because it's being sent to those in a position of responsibility on campus, with the responsibility to look after those in their hall.

But because it was sent to the (male and female) RA's it makes a hell of a lot of sense to remind them to be watchful. There is a line between (potential)victim-shaming and just good advice to keep an out out for those around you.

You know, this is getting absurd. It's good damned advice. Period. It's not shaming, it's not putting the onus on the youngs to not get raped, it's saying "hey, head's up" and it's not bad advice.

Brisket? NO. Brisket is good, but Texas is chicken-fried steak territory.

Well, tears. That was so incredibly beautiful to see.

Aww, I never said anyone HAD a wrinkled soul, just that sunscreen won't prevent it. ;)

I love you. ENCOURAGE ME MORE. OK, no, once was enough.

Holy shit, can't reply to a "joke" without the author freaking out over criticism of her comment. Poorly played.

lol, ,you've been dismissed, as have I. Apparently "freaking out" over her joke causes her to hit dismiss.

You put it so much nicer than I that your reply didn't get dismissed by the author. ;)

They are aged women. Fuck. Wear all the sunscreen you want, it's not going to stop you from developing an ugly, wrinkled soul.
