As a man, I've really enjoyed those knitting hoop looms. Knifty knittter, etc. I watched YouTube videos to learn how to cast off. I make lots of hats and scarves, I can stitch scarves together to make blankets. I just find it relaxing to keep my fingers busy, I also do origami.
I know it's not mind bending or insightful, but I really liked David Edding's The Belgariad and The Mallorean which I always combine together in my head as one story. They were the books that got me hooked on fantasy before I moved on to darker plot lines.

The Giver was the first book I read as child that made me uncomfortable. That dystopian "what is truth?" sort of discomfort. I read it in middle school and I've never read it again, I wonder if I would feel differently now.
