I think it's fine as long as you communicate with your friends that you're all tipping! Sometimes if a friend throws $20 on the table and you say "the rest on my card", people forget that the $20 in cash is not including a tip.

This is good to know! I wonder why separate cheques are a big deal? I've worked in places from a bar and grill to a mid-fancy Italian restaurant, and you didn't blink an eye at separate cheques. The system was set up to handle it just fine.
