The Oscars are at their best when they give the viewers more appreciation for what each category really means. I remember one ceremony that, when listing the screenplay nominees, showed and narrated a page of the script while simultaneously showing that scene. Or when the costume design and production design nominees…

Oscars jumped the shark when they ballooned the best picture category. 

Another thing running under the current of all these declining ratings and ruminations on “why” is that award shows and sports are the leisures of a comfortable society. We aren’t a comfortable society and haven’t been in 4, 5, 10, 15 years. And we’re only getting less comfortable.

Every Olympics going forward will be lower rated than the previous one, as fewer and fewer people watch over-the-air broadcasts and fewer people have cable. It’s all about streaming now.

The streaming options are still confusing and feel like an afterthought. It would be great if you’re a fanatic about one thing. I’m not, I just love sports. I want to see variety, and the hit-the-highlights approach of the broadcast has been really good so far.

It reminded me of weekends where you end up in a drug pick up gone bad (in recovery now), and I think it captured the absurd and often terrifying reality of that world. Which is a world a lot of sex workers exist in on the regular. There’s moments of levity, but a lot of it is just one fucked up thing to the next.
