Films about/focused on teen girls: The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, The Bling Ring, The Beguiled

Holy shit the recency bias is staggering. Where on earth is Edge of Seventeen?!

“some of them were great like... Incredibles 2"

Yeah, “hilarious,” like the AV Club morphing from an incisive outlet for pop culture into a Taylor Swift fansite.

My favorite West quote from a film, in Goin’ to Town (1936) when she’s rebuffing a suitor: “We’re intellectual opposites... I’m intellectual, and you’re opposite.”

No praise until we get confirmation the writers pen their own headlines.

The theater I saw Barbie in showed the trailer for this before the movie. The little kids in the audience were mortified, and it was both hilarious and a sign that little kids shouldn’t have been seeing Barbie.

She should return it, so it can go to its rightful owner: either Meryl Streep, Gabourey Sidibe, or Carey Mulligan!

“When an interesting, non-franchise movie like this wins, we all win, right?”

Bros is from 2022.

I was distracted by his enormous saucer eyes that never seemed to close (until the end).

Did you see The Northman? That was pretty good.

Eh, I like the film and all, but it’s fundamentally a feature-length commercial for a popular IP, unlike anything Kaufman has ever come close to doing.

Film noir was intimately connected to a very specific historical moment and was over well before the 1960s, although you could be thinking of neo-noir, but that went on to flourish throughout the 70s and 80s.

“So when you bring these things into a movie... that’s how they have to be, because that’s how it is in the real world.”

Um, why is her head stuck in a fuzzy pink urinal?

Reminder that Glen Powell got his start on the kids’ reality series Endurance, which I only learned recently!

Can’t really compare, Dench was a beloved old thespian who many felt had been snubbed the previous year. Beatrice Straight won an Oscar for a single scene, though, for Network.

I usually go to independent theaters and see smaller/art films. Audiences are uniformly respectful for those. Make that another reason to avoid the blockbusters and see the more adult stuff.

“powerful debut from one of the most well-known women of our time.”
