People tell me that the “Model Minority” stereotype is harmless.
I think this present case is a good example of why that notion is wrong.

If you read BCO regularly, you will not only discover that yes, there are people that stupid, but there are other people who will come here and attempt to justify said behavior.
“Oh, they’re a vegetarian, so they won’t eat anything that looks like meat.”

I see this so much on Jezebel. We are collectively all too willing to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Caitlin Jenner doesn’t have a fucking clue what it’s like to be an ordinary transgendered person. She’s white, hugely wealthy, lives in a progressive west-coast area, holds grossly hypocritical political views, and is insulated from the vast majority of harms and troubles that other trans women experience as part of…
BUT....(and it’s sad that this is the way the world works, but that’s the way it is)...even though Jenner is not relatable, her celebrity status is what brings visibility to an issue that others may not have been aware of, or being afraid of, or did not understand, etc. etc. Sort of like it didn’t matter that…
“Better Caitlyn Jenner than no one at all”
This is how I feel. Where I live, it only a concept and people struggle to understand. This might help. I hope it does.
I was just trying to explain my reluctance to fully embrace the media frenzy over Caitlyn to my bf, because not every trans person has the luxury to transition in the way that she did. I appreciate it from a visibility standard, but also feel that it’s totally unattainable for most of the community.
Incidentally, I can’t tell you how many kids woke up every morning looking at him* on their cereal boxes in 1978.
Not to compare the two in any way but the fact that they were both star athletes, Bruce Jenner was as big a star as OJ Simpson was back then. Every boy (and probably plenty of girls) wanted to be Bruce Jenner or OJ Simpson in the 1970s. So Bruce’s transition to Caitlyn will have a resounding effect on a huge portion…
In my opinion, the best thing this show could do is show that trans people’s lives are as boring and mundane as everyone else’s most of the time. That’s the only way morons will truly understand that they’re no different from anyone else.
I think it’s tough to overstate how important Jenner’s Olympic success was to people of that generation; my folks, who don’t know who Laverne Cox and Janet Mock are, know about and care about Jenner. I think her continued visibility and fame could be really key to older Americans changing their views. I’m optimistic.
it’s a start
AMIRITE?!?!?! I see this shit all of the time, while I’m all “how much more butter can I get on this egg bagel over here?” EAT. THE. GODDAMN. BAGEL. It will not kill you. You will not gain 88 pounds in 1 sitting.
This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. So first world. Just eat a goddamn piece of toast!
My house was all about the egg fried in bacon grease
Just call them burritos, and we’ll be fine.
I have been saying this for years. YEARS.
