Did you hear that Alabama is planning to close all their DMVs in counties that have 75% or higher black populations? Yeah.
The author was doing a job where he was on his feet all day, so my assumption is that a shift of that, especially with wearing out his shoes so quickly, would make walking an issue.
Where do you think you could possibly live on $1100 pre-tax in the U.S.? After taxes, maybe $800.
Even if it’s just a small amount, starting paying into your pension now. You will be amazed how much it will grow. Wait too long, and you lose all those extra years of investment and interest.
How lucky for you. I’m not poor anymore either, but I remember what it’s like to be so poor that the power is turned off. I was also able to survive on one job, because that was 30 years ago and housing was cheap and cars were cheap and gas was cheap.
I’m a 5’8” woman, and was a size 10 during my poor days. It was impossible to find clothes in thrift stores. Clothes were too short, too old, too worn. I one time scored a couple of Pendleton sweaters for cheap that were black and I was able to mend the pinholes I found.

As a refugee immigrant, you benefited from a special social system. I’ll assume you were a child, and so unaware, but refugees get social workers or aid workers who arrange for housing and jobs, and help them navigate the system to get all available benefits.
I was so glad when banks were required to stop doing that and give you an opt out from automatically covering fees.
Do you have any idea how much college costs now? Or the time involved? If you’re working two or more jobs to survive, then college suddenly becomes simply physically impossible. If you have the time and money to attend college, then you’re not truly poor. If you don’t have the time, then you have to have a lot of…
You’re in Canada, which makes a load of difference, especially since you aren’t paying for healthcare out of your pocket directly.
Well, let’s compare. I’m not poor, but I’m just a bit above the minimal survival income for living in the SF Bay Area.
Once again, the upfront cost of doing these types of things rules them out for people who are poor.
What’s interesting is that a recent study found that many “addicts” quit once their lives stabilize. I think it’s been too easy to play into the addiction story that it’s a disease or a moral weakness, when it’s often a response to stressors that can’t be controlled.
If you or a friend or relative can do auto repair, getting an older, pre- or minimally-computerized car can be a better choice than getting a new one, especially an older quality-made, once-expensive car.
