Borders was great in its heyday. Not only did most of its stores have wildly deep and broad selections, but it could special order literally any book that was in print and had an ISBN. I loved it so much. Then it got ruined by its own corporate masters.

It was also great to just be able to browse books, without knowing which one you wanted. Nearly all of the book purchases I made in the first, oh 25 years of my life came as the result of finishing a book, going “Dang, I need something to read,” going to the local bookstore (sometimes because I worked there), and brows

No, she’s referring to the legion of Bernie voters/Susan Sarandon types who are threatening to blow the whole damn thing up if Bernie doesn’t win (ie: vote Trump). This comes from a place of privilege. You can weather the storm for four years, but a lot of people are gonna fucking die because you pouted when your guy

I think she’s saying people with the luxury to withdraw their support from the process should THINK OF the vulnerable people, and not themselves.

Excellent point. As a semi-counterpoint, I will say that the mall closest to my house has several nice(ish) restaurants in it, including a couple incorporated into department stores. By my quick, by memory, count, there are no less than 10 full bars in the place. This doesn’t change anything about what you’ve said

If anyone ever told you that the left is easy to take offense, please take note of the thousands of offenses which the political right believe absolutely require governmental intervention. Count the thousands of times you didn’t see a gay relationship on TV—for fear it might offend someone—even though at least 10% of

Those people never grew up with an ancient septic system. Trust me, when your septic tank backs up and floods your house because you used one square too much of TP, you’ll never flush a tampon EVER.

My period every month is an unflinchingly brutal, you-are-there, raw-element immersion like something you’ve never seen. The Revenant will be child’s play, sir.

The TARDIS’ true speed either is a divide by zero error, or involves multiplying by i. :-P

I honestly 100% thought all people were checking out all other people all of the time. that’s why I have insane social anxiety

No, I know, I’ve been following. It’s more the “I don’t understand because I liked these things here, the way they are” sort of not understanding.

Awww, one last Pinkham’s Law. Thanks for coming.

For all the Small-Businesses-Can’t-Afford-Sick-Days-Employees-Aren’t-Really-Sick-Anyway-Why-Can’t-I-Have-More-Loyal-Employees-Anecdata-Is-Real-Data crowd:

Can I come work there?

I’ve always earned both separately. I work in higher ed and standard for me has been 5 sick days and 10 vacation days per year. At my current job one of the best benefits is that we accrue an unbelievable amount of time off. I am currently sitting on 70 sick days, 35 vacation days, 2 optional holidays, and 1 personal

When you run your business on the assumption that your employees will not get ill and that you can use the bare minimum staff all the time, it is mismanaging. Yet somehow too many incompetent assholes in mismanagement schools are okay with that.

I much prefer a workplace that looks at “sick” days as “wellness days” you don’t have to give a reason, but the reason is you are trying to be well. Whether that’s staying home with the flu, getting a massage or whatever else you need to do to keep your sanity. I find when the stigma is gone, it’s much easier to ask

My boss will literally kick our asses out if we come in sick. We get paid. She started here when she was really young and the prior boss was a jerk about sick days and she hated how that boss made people feel guilty about leaving. I love my job now. We also get 6 sick days and 2 weeks vacation. My last job was just 10

It’s interesting that I read articles like these on Lifehacker not because I believe they will help me, but to instead see how easily my depression can overwhelm whatever is suggested.
