“ . . . excluding sporting events”
I’ve been pleasantly surprised that even a couple of folks have found my clarifications reasonable, even if not completely agreeable. Maybe Deadspin is broken or something.
This is also a very salient point. I definitely understand that the UFC is in this business to make money. I guess I'm a bit too much of an idealist and figured the organization owed Aldo a little more based on what he did in helping establish the now incredibly lucrative lighter weight classes in the UFC.
I don’t disagree that the Cruz comparison may have been a weak one. I acknowledged as much in a previous response. This is a solid counter-counter-point to my original counter-point.
Forgive me, I should have been more clear. There WAS a bit of a hubbub about Anderson sort of phoning it in before he sort of had a resurgence, beginning with the first Sonnen fight. If I remember correctly, Dana White ripped him for putting forth some lackluster performances for a short period, even if they WERE…
This is also true. Although I wonder whether that would have been the case had he been inactive for one or two years, rather than four total. That’s sheer speculation on my part, though.
Very true. He also wasn’t coming off a loss, more to your point. Just cited Cruz as a guy who the UFC didn’t mind giving several chances after scrapping fights due to injury. Might very well be apples and oranges, tho.
I don’t take any issue with your position here. I’ll just point out that Dominick Cruz has pulled out of more fights and been on the shelf waaaaay longer. Granted, he didn’t lose in his return and his fights haven’t been hyped like Aldo/McGregor was. So I concede that the promotional aspect is a hurdle to making that…
I can see where you’re coming from. At the same time, stacking W’s is stacking W’s. And Anderson was also knocked for how he sort of tapered off toward the end of his reign and settled for decisions. People still, evidently, consider him to have been dominant. I’d say their careers are comparable at the very least. 5…
Thank you, kindly. It’s probably even more uncommon for someone to read the entire thing and respond without snark when the topic is such that rational minds could reasonably disagree. I probably shouldn’t have called the other commenter on this thread a dick. Just got a bit annoyed that his response gave the…
Ronda isn’t getting an immediate rematch because she has other commitments. The consensus, including from Dana’s own lips, was that Ronda would get an immediate rematch, so either you had your head in the sand or you’re just being obtuse. As far as how Ronda ran through her division, how long did she do it? Oh, that’s…
No, you’re correct that those other individuals shouldn’t be overlooked. I don’t disagree with you at all to that extent. I know that whole “fuck Dana White and the blonde haired, blue eyed horse he rode in on” quip gives the impression that I’m willing to overlook non-minority athletes getting the same bullshit…
Yes. Very much. All of this, yes. Even without the racial component (to which most of my non-minority friends sort of roll their eyes), it’s hard not to look at the situation relative to, say Ronda Rousey’s situation and NOT think, “Wow, that’s a dick move.” I don’t know how anyone could say Ronda deserves an…
I’d wager if someone is dumb enough to help dispose of a 13 yr old murder victim’s body that they probably aren’t aware of actions that would trigger federal jurisdiction... If I was a gambling man, that is.
Also, ducks are a much more intimidating fowl. Those fuckers are relentless.
The ol’ “answering the phone” technique
Wait... What? People are kept out of participating in sports all the time... Say, for example, due to a failed physical. Also, it’s not so much that they “pushed him as hard as the other teammates.” It’s that they’re trained to recognize when something is wrong and do something about it. The thrust here isn’t that he…
WHOOOOOOOOOSH!
