I watched it recently and it’s infinitely quotable and one of my favorites, but the Proximo is the only character with any depth. Maximus is the ideal hero while Commodus is just a sadist (Joaquin Phoenix is amazing though).

take out the “sex scene”, which is gross and rapey and completely fucked up, and the first is great. I’ve never seen the theatrical version. Still haven’t seen 2049 despite loving the first move (minus the rapey bits) and the video game.
