They do have to work not to kill humans though. Bella's "family" are in fact animalians. They only eat bears and mountain lions and the other vampires think they're freaks when they have home alone parties... Ergo all the angst. That last bit is my explanation for it at least.

I see your logic, but that's what henna tattoos are for. The whole point of a tattoo is that you make the design a permanent part of you. If you do it thoughtlessly you usually regret it and that's how it should be.

I suspect there might be a personal issue between the teacher and the student and/or mother. That they wanted to "get" him for some reason. Maybe they have an old argument, or the teacher has different religious views or lifestyle, or he just punished the student for something they feel was unfair. Who knows...

Plus there's problem of those really heavy exposition bits with the library program and the whole weird religion and language stuff. It works awesomely in the books but I don't see how it could be transated into a movie. And removing them would take some of the weirdest and funniest bits out of the story...
