Hey that’s no fair! I’m also never not feeling myself, but instead of a “God Bless You,” I get “that’s inappropriate” and “please leave the church right now or we’re calling the police.”

Fair point. I saw him perform at Maryland in 2004 when I was 15 and visiting a friend at college. I had never heard of him before, and he made me laugh harder than anything had up to that point except Monty Python. I thought he was hilarious until about 2006 or 2007, at which point he became terrible. Now teenagers…
That’s a really good point, plus there’s lots of potential backlash for a sophomore album because people are usually going to either be pissed off that your second album sounds too much like the first (Mumford and Sons, to pick an example close to my heart) or too little like the first (say, MGMT)
I think you’re right. Although I am sometimes skeptical about how much of the phenomenon you describe is *actually the art is not as good* or that we’re just primed to not think it’s as good because of that expectation.
Fair enough, I needed a third example really quick and jumped to the biggest hit album I could think of - obviously the comparison is premature. But to play Devil’s Advocate slash Let’s Wait And See, Adele is 27 years old. When Bruce Springsteen was 27, Darkness On The Edge Of Town hadn’t come out yet - he had…
I took a course in college called “Music and Madness,” so I don’t disagree. I was just concern-trolling you about the “name one artist” part, which was probably silly of me. What I should have said is that I believe that while poverty is not *required* to make great art, there is certainly something to be said for the…
My apologies!
Bruce Springsteen (sometimes)
This might be derided as obvious, but as additional information the term “Stan” for this more intense fandom comes from the eponymous Eminem song about an obsessive fan.

Deadspin may be getting more traffic, more notoriety, and even performing legitimately excellent feats of journalism that blow the traditionalists out of the water (Moskovitz/Howard longforms especially, but you know what I mean) - but it’s good to see you stay true to your roots. This is the best journalism.
Is he going to be co-starring on Betty White’s new show?
Heads of squads are traditionally butts of jokes. I hope Zidane can keep his cool.
In other news, Javaris Crittendon says Gilbert Arenas is the best point guard he ever played with.
I lost my keys out in the world yesterday, and that means I can’t drive my car and will have to navigate inconvenient methods of getting into my apartment and work for the foreseeable future. Can you guys help me out with some good or funny advice?
I saw them in Albany for ten dollars on May 19, 2006. I’ll never forget that night - still my favorite concert ever, and that night (aged 17) I got drunk for the first time on friend-parent-pilfered fare like random wine and vermouth. Next day I woke up no hangover, refereed youth soccer, and thought “hey I could get…
This is reminding me of last year when I went to the ten-year ...Is A Real Boy concert. I don’t know whether I’m just different at 26 versus 16 or if Say Anything didn’t really pan out as great as I thought they would...but that album will always be amazing. One of those albums where you don’t skip a single song.
Who wants to sex Roberson?
I was 150% on board with the “run to first base at any time play” and then I realized the sadness...if anybody does it, it’s going to result in a lot more throws from home plate to first base while the batter is running up the line...and directly from home plate, not like the catcher has fielded a bunt or something.…
