I don’t see why, even those who choose to not have children of their own, people think that leaving child rearing to the extremely affluent is good for society. Every other major country in the world understands that they exist in a community, and taking care of others is to the benefit of everyone.

Oh you don’t? When do you go to the doctor (most keep bankers hours), or get your oil changed? Do you ever spend time at work checking your bank account, or paying bills online? If your company gives you any “paid time off”, then yes you are being paid for your responsibilities.

Most places will only take 3 months and up, and even then I couldn’t imagine. I was lucky/stupid enough to have my son while I was a graduate student and had an extremely flexible schedule.

When one group benefits, instead of being mad about how you don’t get that benefit, why not build upon it, instead of disparage them? The “I’ve-got-mine-so-fuck-you” attitude of “personal choice” is repugnant.

Well maybe if parental leave exists, when your parents, or loved ones (assuming you have any) get extremely sick and require YOU to take time away from your job, then you can enjoy the same benefit too.
