Osaka’s discomfort and social anxiety in press conferences is and has long been palpable. And at the French in particular, she’s relentlessly grilled about her clay court performance, which clearly undermines her confidence. Her job is to play and win; THAT’S how she adds value to a sport that she has helped as much

I agree that this entire thing seems silly. Naomi Osaka’s job is to play tennis and win. Everything she does is done with that goal in mind, and that is what she gets paid to do by tournaments and sponsors. It’s not her job to make sure there’s plenty of fodder for gasbag pundits and stenographers to witter on about

How often have you watched a tennis match to watch tennis? How often have you watched a tennis match because you want to have more context for what they say in the press conference afterwards? This seems beyond silly to me. She says talking to the press is bad for her mental health. What is there for her to discuss

Yes! I think this is what really rubbed me the wrong way over this whole spectacle. What happened to this girl is a tragedy. While I appreciate the sentiment behind the reaction to this photo, her grief is real and she deserves the time, space and privacy to process it. Grief is ugly and we need to let it be ugly.

I saw so many people who were either like “You have to do thing to your social media or you don’t support black lives!” but it was almost entirely white people.

I really hate that you’re right about this. It’s true even within my own liberal circles.

Oh my god, that last line so much! She's a child, not a saint! Nor should she be expected to be a saint! Whether she goes on into a career of activism or becomes a waitress at Applebee's, she's a human being who should just get to live a normal life.

I really hate all the “And a child shall lead us!” that happens whenever a public tragedy happens involving a child. Adults want to ooh and ahh, but never change anything. Even in the cases where the children do pursue causes related to their tragedies, nothing changes. “Heroic” high school students have been fighting

Liberals only care about Black people when they can dehumanize them through martyrdom or tokenization, distancing themselves from the white supremacist heart of this country without ever having to threaten their own comfort or the power and privilege granted them by that white supremacy. Conservatives only care about

Thanks for this article. it is both gross and disappointing to see the ‘fanfictioning’ of a little girl’s grief. But I suppose I should only be surprised that I’m surprised at this point. I think everyone needs to realize how crushingly sad this photo really is. Not only does Gianna need to navigate her grief in a

Gianna Floyd will not only grow up without a father, but this event will be the main thing that she is known for for the rest of her life. Wherever she goes, her identity will be forever connected to her father’s and Derek Chauvin’s. Her father’s death will be the first (and probably the only) thing people ask about.

I truly hated the “Papa Joe” thing when I saw it. Had not seen the Cheetos and ice cream thing, but that’s even worse, somehow.

Thank you for writing so well about what rubbed me the wrong way about this picture.

If there is a God may they grant Gianna some semblance of a normal life, and may the media grant her privacy.

“Companires aren’t democracies”

That the post went up in the first place is a sign of the growing sentiment for the Palestinian cause. The flag of Palestine on the front page is probably what triggered many to become huffy. Flags often cause strong emotions. Otherwise the vast majority probably support humanitarian relief efforts.

Yep, just put it back up.  Tomorrow would be good.

It’s a bizarrely written article that suggests that this is a debatable point... is the AV Club scared of pissing off China, and if so, why? Who are they scared of pissing off here?

I am shocked, shocked I tell you. Corporate being (supposedly) blameless, and somehow this being the fault of those darned uppity employees with their morals and ethics? Why, who would’ve ever expected such a thing. Not to worry though, corporate will have everything back doubleplusgood soon enough.

That whole “because money” is more than just a charade and not even a reasonable excuse. These are the same kind of people that get so much pull from the public that it doesn’t humble them, it creates a worse person.
And least we forget what bad politics and celebrities create with a certain 45th...
