The long and short of it - accidents happen. Nobody wants to crash into a door, and nobody wants their door crashed into. Both parties need to be cautious, right? Why does it have to be so political? Riding with no hands and no helmet is exactly like driving a car with no hands and no seatbelt - if something pops out…

i almost replied to the previous comment that this is my biggest fear as both a driver and a cyclist. I used to bike every day last year before i started a new job just out of the city that requires driving. i think it helps to be able to see both sides - doesn't make it any less dangerous.

In Chicago, "Dooring" (opening your car door in front of a biker and essentially mimicking a brick wall) is punishable by a fine of $1,000. I have seen some people get pretty messed up like this in the news.
