Add this to the list of things Android has been doing for years.
Note: I was pre-3/22 pricing, so my sticker price was $80,950. The price today, with identical config (quad motor, A/T upgrade, etc) would be $97,350. Dual motor is waaaay more than enough power though, so if I had to pick today, I would do that for $89k. This is all before any federal/state rebates.
“it could do close to/over 200mph and had a zero-60 in 4 seconds depending on the trim”
when it didn’t kill you.
Rivian R1S owner here with 2 kids. I could give two ishes about the third row. I just need room behind the 2nd row for a stroller and all of their other crap when we go out for a weekend trip. Tesla Model X would have been a perfect size, but the $100k+ price tag was too rich for my tastes.
A lot of cities are starting to include mandates and/or incentives to include EV charging into new projects, but your point still stands that L2 chargers need to be more prevalent at home (notably apartments) and work.
Have a Tesla and a Rivian, and the charging experience between the two is miles apart. The charging infrastructure absolutely needs to be improved for anything not owned by Elon. Even with the mass migration to NACS, the Tesla SC network can’t absorb every last EV in the US, so other companies absolutely need to get…
I own a Rivian, and I can definitely relate to the argument. I’m putting ~2x as much weight on the road as a Honda Civic, but yet don’t contribute anything to the maintenance of said road. I’d be happy to pass over my fair share, especially considering I’m still coming out ahead in overall fuel costs and maintenance…
4th Gear: “The vehicles purchase would cost almost $200 million more than the lowest-priced comparable gasoline-powered vehicles.”
Right, but what’s the total cost of ownership? I think you’ll see something very close to price parity when long term maintenance and fuel costs come into play.
Lower cost of living and lower taxes, generally.
My mom retired to Las Vegas due to it’s lack of income tax and lack of cold weather (she’ll take 110F over 15F any day of the week). Doesn’t care for the beach life, so Florida didn’t have any added appeal.
But why would you need to go SF>LA on a single charge? Your body is going to likely want to stop before that, and you could stop for a bio break and a snack, then be on your way.
This obviously is based on a reliable charging infrastructure, which as I mentioned, is absolutely not there yet. Fix that, and the range…
Used to live in Austin (and now live in Colorado). I can certainly relate to those distances. However, that’s still more “road trip” than daily commute, and in that case, one should easily be able to knock out 20 mins of time to charge up before returning home...if the infrastructure didn’t suck.
Not saying you’re wrong (I literally have no idea what your individual use case it), but most folks only need hundreds of miles of range when road-tripping. Day-to-day use means waking up with a full “tank” every morning. Can’t think of many folks driving 200+ miles a day regularly.
Now on the road-trip front, the…
Like any good consultant would say, “it depends”. Most of the cost variance coming from how far the main panel is from the desired location of the EVSE. We were fortunate enough to have our main 200A panel on the exterior garage wall itself, so running two lines (one to each side...literally 2ft for one and ~30ft for…
That and EVs generally have a much lower rate of depreciation than ICE vehicles (for now at least).
They come pre-misaligned from the factory to point right through the dead center of your windshield now.
Given Volvo’s heavy push toward EVs, I can’t imagine it will be long before we see electric V90/60's.
I think folks looking for a smaller pickup aren’t the “I need to stack 10 4x8 sheets of plywood regularly” type, but they are the “I need to get 20 bags of mulch home for the front yard and don’t want to filth up the cabin, but otherwise need it to get Johnny and Julie to kindergarten 5x a week” type.
