Much as I’d like to disagree with you I think there is a good chance that you are spot on. This family is too far gone to make it back to any kind of normal. I’m not sure why anyone is expecting any kind of good outcome.

Those are all reasonable considerations, which is to say, largely irrelevant to these people’s thought processes. I mean, once they’ve unmoored themselves from some parts of reality, it shouldn’t be shocking that they lose contact with others.
