This seems like a natural progression from the autostick. The VW unit used 2,3, and 4th, dropping first since the TC supplied the torque multiplication. Also back then they didnt have ECUs to keep the engine from stalling from a start. Some modern computers wont allow you to stall the engine with poor throttle control…
