You’ve got to read the book for that part to make sense, really. Metals will deform before failure while carbon fiber (which the habitat walls were made of) will suddenly break. It was set up, and did make sense in context... But the movie just kinda handwaved it away.

Eh. Now, if she got her commission at 21, promoted to O-2 at 23, then did 5 years as an O-3 and got a below-the-zone to O4 at 28 - it’d work.
