I read it twice and I still don’t find any mention of why a touchfree car where there is no cleaning apparatus touching the car is bad.

I did. Unless I’m mistaken, it doesn’t say anything about touchless car washes. This is about brushless, and the entire point is the foam strips they use (which touch your car) pick up dirt from other cars, and scratch your paint with it.

I believe the article is referring to the old school style as well as the “brushless” which can otherwise be known as “Soft Touch” car washes. Brushless just means that they aren’t using synthetic bristles to wipe away dirt, but rather some sort of cloth or sponge-like material on large drums or spindles.
