I should have specified MOBILE versions of web pages make apps unnecessary. Lots of sites have mobile versions for low-bandwidth and small screens, for example "m.lifehacker.com" or [www.bbc.co.uk]

Why make a phone app when a web page will do the job? Is that for people without the wherewithal to save a bookmark?
