When I read the Hunger Games series I was struck by just how realistic its portrayal of what it’s like to be in the midst of a war was. I barely recall the love triangle. It’s a shame it was marketed that way.
Your comment reads like you either didn’t read the article or missed the point entirely. Investigative journalism often has the potential risk of harming people—she used all of the mitigating strategies she could, as any investigative journalist would (and does).
I’ve had to argue with people to say that it was legitimate sci-fi (it’s set in an alternate future with multiple invented technologies). Funny how male geeks tend to omit female written novels when it comes to “true” sci-fi.
This is exactly how men writing novels is “literary fiction” but the same book written by a woman is categorized as “romance.”
Who was the (male) journalist who just went undercover as a prison guard to do an expose on the privatization of prison system? Anyone chastise him for emotionally damaging the inmates on his cell block through deception?
It wasn’t supposed to be an academic study. It was supposed to be journalism.
And how many writers really have enough clout to choose their publisher? You want to get published, you take what you can get. (And which major publisher that takes women as seriously as men should she have picked? This is an industry-wide…
It’s not academic study, it’s investigative journalism.
Wait, did I miss something? Who said it was an academic study?
This made me go back and read my own review of Kim’s book. Apparently, I fell victim to this memoir-ization of her book, and you know what? It does a real disservice to the book. I read this book. I thought few books captured how censored and boxed in foreign workers are in North Korea in terms of witnessing everyday life. They try to see life through these tiny cracks; she even talks about the malaise. I think she may have been a lot more accurate than most foreign writers over there— I think…

Depressing, but not surprising.
Jia, you can spend $2000 one time and get a blond wig so good most people won’t notice. #wearingawigfor17years
I’m sure you know my hair better, but it’s in excellent condition. And, I did use a blue toner to remove the red after taking out the dark brown and before adding the crimson so that the color was as pure as possible. So, can I speak now? After crimson I went to platinum blonde, and it was magnificent.
however: counterpoint: maybe if they keep making these “all women” remakes of other movies, all the MRAs in this damn country will rage-stroke out, and we’ll be rid of them once and for all.
I know. Recasting male lead films with women isn’t quite the same thing as writing some good and compelling roles for women.
I’m here for it, but. Can we just let ladies have their own awesome franchise tho.
Whoosh
HAVE YOU EVEN SEEN SPOOKY WITH A BAG ON THEIR HEAD?!
