I walked by it sometimes, but no. I worked at UT, and spent most of my time on and around campus. But I saw Segway tours almost everywhere there was sidewalk, including trying to cross Congress during the first really good bat day of spring.

There are a lot of things I miss about Austin. Segway tours of neckbeards taking up the whole sidewalk isn’t one of them.
If the police decide, for whatever reason, not to move on the case, a victim can have recourse through the university. For example, many rape cases filed with the state don’t even result in charges being filed, and there are many reasons for that. Universities can have different standards of evidence, which might…
Y’all are really dead set as seeing this as some sort of pro-Bowie argument, which is odd b/c my comment deals explicitly and exclusively with the girl-turned-woman at issue.
Yep. I’ve also heard of incidents like this at UT satellites and at Texas Tech.
It’s a real head-scratcher. Generally in academia, the university doesn’t really verify that you worked at the last place you say you did. It’s almost always recommendations. There can be some differences in what a candidate is asked to produce for senior hires (which it sounds like this was). I’ve never had to write…
Anne Hathaway: Making that face every pregnant woman spends the last two months of her pregnancy making.
But Dr. Gilad said that when it was contacted, Princeton said there had been no sexual harassment investigation of Dr. Lieb while he was there. He said efforts to find out more about what prompted Dr. Lieb’s departure proved fruitless. A Princeton spokeswoman said the university does not comment on personnel matters.
Oof, my friend was harrassed via e-mail (and other venues), but because it went to her personal e-mail, the chair decided that was a ‘personal matter’ and the university couldn’t intervene. Even though he sent the email from his university address and threatened consequences to her work if she didn’t acquiese.
I only recently moved back to the midwest (~3 years ago, hadn’t lived here in the 10 years previous), but I still drive a regular-sized family car and stuff. If it’s a white-out, or the plows haven’t been by, I’m not going somewhere I can’t walk to.
That’s awesome. I bought into it at my job after my first pregnancy (for which I did have unpaid leave), and my husband at his. It was great both when my husband got ill and when I had a second pregnancy.
I don’t think this insurance necessarily needs to be *free*, but it should be available without breaking the bank.
I actually like this idea a lot better than maternity-explicit policies. I work in higher ed, and most grad students have to drop out and re-enroll if they have or adopt a baby, become seriously ill or injured, have to care for a new non-child dependent, need to go to rehab, etc. And we’ll probably get more done if we…
It’s fascinating how many men believe 100% that science is a meritocracy. Until they don’t get a grant or job.
Yeah, I really worry about mandatory screenings for that reason.
No, but I did have to complete a depression screening with a social worker before I was allowed to leave the hospital with the baby. Not sure if that was state or local law.
I also have an IUD and use a cup. I was a little worried the first time I put it back in (post-partum + IUD), but it was totally fine. I do find that my cervix is a little more sensitive to the sucking feeling, so I’m more diligent about breaking the seal.
I grew up in a few places in the upper midwest, and it was a common thing for someone to vanish, then be found outside in a snowbank or something. Or to leave a party without a coat on to pee outside in the snow, and then wander home, improperly dressed. A lot of other people thought it was funny, but it always struck…
There’s a really awful interaction between cold weather and alcohol that makes people not realize they’re in danger until far too late. There are even cases of people being dressed fine for conditions, but undressing because they felt warm, and then freezing to death.
PSA for the young ‘uns out there: If you lose sight…
You can absolutely have coffee and soda. But two or so cups is totally fine. And I found that I needed a lot less coffee while pregnant because my digestion was so slow that I got a long-lasting hit off one cup.
