The really scary thing, though, is that Texas has been remarkably successful at redistricting to ensure Republican control. When I lived there, I voted in a district with people 50 miles away and in the family housing unit of a military base. Something really bad has to happen before we’ll get an urban, working-class

I can’t answer for what the nurse’s line of thinking was, but my friend said that the nurse told her that the OB had written down that a question was asked about THC exposure, and that she was concerned that the mom was using and that ‘state law’ said the baby had to be drug tested. The OB thought nothing of the fact

My friend lived in a state where it was legal when she had her son. Her boyfriend asked the doctor about marijuana exposure, since the pregnancy was a surprise. The mom didn’t smoke, but had been around people who do. In the hospital, a nurse found that the doctor had made a note in her records that the partner

I agree. I was talking to a group of graduate students who are on fellowships that don’t provide insurance, but provide money to pay for insurance. They were really worried, but when I pointed them to the tool for estimating insurance costs and comparing plans above, they all found plans that come in well under their

Yep. I’ve let people go over that exact behavior. Some men cannot adjust to a woman boss, some white people can’t adjust to a boss of color. I have no idea what’s behind the 20->80% shift, and that needs to be teased apart (if it’s even true). But these transitions are often hard to manage in a way that is difficult

What if the men in management positions were really shitty at working with a female boss?

Despite the name, a Mighty Girl has a lot of books on social issues that don’t just appeal to girls:

I think that criticism and hate are different things. I am critical of Sandberg; I don’t hate her on a personal level. To me, being critical of someone means that you listen carefully what they are saying, think about it, and express what you think are the flaws in it. I think that a lot of the things that are framed

I don’t think I said anything about your personal feelings about her. As I said, I have a lot of criticisms about her work (and that of Reshma Saujani, who makes very similar points specifically aimed at the tech sector), so I don’t think it’s fair to say that I’m equating criticism with hatred.

I agree. And I have a lot of criticism for her (and Reshma Saujani), but I also think a lot of the hate for her is sort of unfair.

They’d say “holy shit we gave them a ton of concessions and they still didn’t turn out? Guess we need to move more center as clearly the far left will never vote for us no matter what so we can’t pick up their votes anyway.”

It really sounds like this film is exactly what your would expect for a movie about motherhood written by men. There’s a lot to explore when it comes to being a ‘bad’ mom in a culture where mothering trends tend to keep women tied to their babies for longer and longer (extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, etc), yet

I’m sorry, I misunderstood your meaning. With the GoFundMe and the martyr comment, I thought you were trying to imply that the expression of grief we’re seeing was orchestrated or not genuine.

My cousin and his wife are visible in one of those pictures. I never asked either of them him a martyr, because that’s fucking assinine and not at all what martyr means. But as a school teacher in the district where Castile worked and a public health nurse serving people in that same area, they definitely feel loss.

Oh, wild, I’m a woman in a research and admin position, too. I feel really lucky that the worst of these morons really only seem to come out on the internet.

No problem;)

Uh, what?

Presumably.

I’m not just shooting from the hip - I’m actually involved in this type of law:

We have a long tradition of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ in the courts. A college campus is not a court. Suspending someone is not proving them legally guilty, and it’s sure as hell not putting them in jail.
