My grandfather was of Welsh extraction and his given name was Shirley, which I guess was a distinctly male name before the mid-1800s, when the Bronte novel was published. But he was born in the 20s, when it was pretty exclusively female.

@aldonza: I know a few male Ashleys, and they're all cool and well-adjusted. It just means "from the ash lea," which doesn't imply either gender. (I only know this cos my sister is also an Ashley.)
