“they believe they are in a no win situation, “I hurt them if I stay and I hurt them if I go” and it’s too painful to stay.” Oh? Please provide some authoritative references on that.

I’m not saying that that’s never the case. I’m saying that for any individual case you can’t assume that it’s going to be true. It’s

Right. Too many people are saying he’s a Mussolini when he’s actually a Berlusconi. It’s irresponsible and it’s frightening people.

“not exaggerating their fears” - For the most part, I don’t question the reality of the fear. I just question that the fear is based in reality. There’s a ton of media saying, ‘be afraid,’ but hardly anything tethering those breathless exhortations to reality. We should be concerned about Trump blundering us into

Seriously? That’s adorable if you think that’s true. If you lived in a city that went2 to 1 for Trump, you would hear a different argument. I don’t agree with that argument, but it’s not without merit.

wouldn’t that apply to any GOP Pres?

there’s actually a non-sinister explanation for that but I don’t think anyone actually cares about it enough to bother getting into it

I see a difference... between the threat posed by Xian terrorists & Islamic ones, and it undoes your analogy.

Two out of three of the things you mentioned aren’t crazy or even necessarily bad. They may be unpopular in some parts of the country, but in other parts they.re not. Deporting illegal immigrants and finishing the wall/fence aren’t threats to democracy.

Rounding up? They’re talking about possibly reinstating a registry for Islamic immigrants that we had under Bush. Either you’re misinformed or looking to scare people.

that’s not fair. if both choices are highly corrupt it’s not irrational to prefer ineptitude.

I don’t think the decision involved technical knowledge. My understanding is that the advice was about legal issues: warrants, FOIA requests, and privacy vs investigative procedures. Sounded like she didn’t know how to use a printer. She sent emails to people in her staff asking them to print out other emails.

1) I don’t think you can generalize that way about suicidal LGBT people. Just because they may’ve been rejected by many people doesn’t mean they no longer care about how their actions affect others.
2) Even if you were right you’re still talking about a small sample that is insufficient if you’re justifying a general

Howdy- I’m having trouble reading this thread because I don’t know the difference between the left and the liberals. Do they differ in terms of strategy or issues or... ?

Have you ever been in need of the services you offer? From my POV ‘compleed’ seems more problematic than ‘committed.’

“social pressure/stigma doesn’t work” - That is silly. Of course it does.  The problem isn’t with ineffectiveness but targeting. The question is whether it’s possible to avoid inhibiting more than you want to.

Personally, I think the stigma should be fought with regard to how we speak of having the thoughts but reinforced by how we speak about ending one’s life. For example, “struggled with” suicidal thoughts vs “committed” suicide. Struggling doesn’t imply brokeness and suggests a need for assistance. Committing something

guilt and shame of feeling suicidal is the only thing keeping some suicidal people from doing it?

that makes sense: making the choice be seen as shameful BUT saying that no one should be ashamed of the illness generating the impulse AND no on should be embarrassed when they need help resisting the impulse

you’re failing to differentiate between stigmatizing the illness itself and stigmatizing a terrible action someone might falsely perceive as a cure
