Breaking Bad’s final season had an extra 3 episodes as well - I think it’s just an extra bit of breathing room to ensure all loose ends are tied up. Some (including myself) even predict that it’ll be a standard 10-episode season of Better Call Saul, with the last 3 episodes exclusively being set in the Gene timeline!

I strongly suspect Gilligan/Gould/et al have nothing to do with the cartoon, and it’s the network just cashing in a bit on a very popular and prestige IP. If it sucks I’m just gonna think of it as non-canon.
