Yeah sorry - not trying to be defensive. It’s just that some people don’t realize what a complex thing game dev can be!

More like acing all your tests, and getting the semester project done half-way through and the prof. goes ‘How about something harder for you?’

I replied to a different thread earlier with some of the absolute crazy shit that has come out of left field for me during game development, but to briefly recap - there’s no way you can account for some of this stuff, unless you’re building in months of buffer time. (which no Publisher is going to allow)

I don’t agree. You can’t just say “Well if they’re behind schedule it’s because Managers didn’t Manage very well!”

When I first became a level designer I got a “salary” of 23k. Then was forced to work 100 hour weeks for the rest of the project, which ended up being a few years. I think that calculates to $4-something an hour. I was making ~$10 as a tester before being promoted. If I complained my boss would say,”There are a 100

“I speak Italian, you know.”

My friend worked for a big video game company in Montreal. Everybody did unpaid overtime. (programmers, artists, designers, qa). advice: never go in this field if you want a life.

I have worked for months of crunch on a game. For some of that time, it was 7 days a week. Literally no day off for months. I was a salary employee, no overtime. This was required.

Yeah, but fuck that. Reading this article made me angry. No one should have to work huge hours and then tack on overtime and not get paid for that time. Just bullshit. It shows publishers/business gives no fucks about hard work. The people making the game should be allowed to enjoy the reward and financial gain of

All of this crunch stuff reaks of a complete misunderstanding of project phases, skilled labor and basic planning skills.

That’s me! I don’t mind the Patriots, and I believe Brady is GOAT. But he totally broke the rules, and worse than that, lied like a smiling idiot about it. And then the NFL responded disproportionately in punishment. And now every Patriots fan thinks the NFL is out to get them because they just won too damn much. And

I think 4 games is too long, but, the Patriots hung Goodell out to dry first here. Brady stared at the cameras and lied, and Deadspin accepts that as well. Sure, Goodell is power-drunk and insane, but BRady and the Patriots put him in a no-win situation. He was going to get blasted if he had gone too light for

I would love to see Deadspin gather all the sponsors, with email addresses, for FIFA then write an “I will not buy any of your products if you continue to support slave labor” letter. Then each reader who chooses can simply copy and paste and send away.

What good is a western liberal democracy if it can't take a stand on human rights being more valuable than money?

I would hope you’re right about the US just needing to pull out. However, it seems like if the US did that, FIFA would push harder. I could be wrong but it seems the US is met with a lot of disdain around the soccer world.

OOHH! Zinger there! Because if somebody fucked up in the past, they forever forfeit the right to recognize when other people fuck up. Makes sense.

Russia will happen, with much of the projects halfway and there’s really no loud opposition with most people talking about Qatar.

I don’t think Qatar will happen. The pressure is incredibly intense right now, and it’s still 7 years away. If teams and (more importantly) sponsors threaten to pull out, I can see FIFA capitulating. All it would take is Germany or even the US to threaten not to play and the situation would change overnight. Russia

I keep hoping they’ll strip Qatar and Russia but it looks extremely unlikely. I should also probably stop playing FIFA 15 (and eventually 16) too. But that’s just as unlikely.
