It's a great scene, but I think I still prefer the book version, where the action happens off-screen (off-page?). You don't see his heroism directly, but you still see it in the aftermath. It sort of leaves you the opportunity to play it out in your head on your own.

As someone who's been in a similar situation (not art-related), and didn't complete my submission and basically gave up on it, I can definitely say that the amount of regret and self-loathing I feel for not doing it drastically outweighs what I felt at the time.
