I think the point was that more white people have benefited from it directly - so they have signed up, or whatever - and they stand to lose more. Not that it has some sort of systemic bias toward white people.

Inequality is always going to exist, in some form. I can’t think of any society where everyone was truly on the same level. What we should be focusing on is muting the impacts of that inequality, removing some of the systemic biases that influence inequality, and providing clearer avenues to class mobility.
Actually, “not identifying ethnic distinctions” is the wrong thing to do. This article at Slate explains it better than I ever could, but basically children are fully capable of recognizing these differences (and recognizing racism in the world around them) and parents who don’t talk about it can reinforce that the…
‘you have some mental block keeping you from understanding that the majority of sour interactions with police involve people who are acting normally.’
So you’re saying somebody gets pulled over and acts normally, and a cop for no reason at all starts beating the piss out of them, or pulls out a gun and shoots them in…
‘Yeeeah, no. First and foremost, what you suggest shouldn’t be a prerequisite to not getting murdered.’
Of course, you’re right. Just like a woman should be able to go to a party, drink copious amounts of alcohol, go home with a guy she doesn’t know, all without fear of being sexually assaulted. But the question is, do…
Speaking as a white male cop....this ^^^^^! I don’t think the “sir” or “ma’am” part is even necessary or expected. I’ve been a cop for 23 years, and unless it’s coming from a youth, being called “sir” still makes me feel a little uncomfortable. But keeping your hands in view (without being obnoxious about it),…
Yup. As much as some cops are assholes who make interactions with them more combative than they need to be, I guarantee you a TON of people who complain about the time some cop started fucking with them caused the problem in the first place with their body language and tone of voice.
You could teach him the same way my dad (being a former police officer himself) taught me. If you get pulled over by a cop, keep both hands on the steering wheel, answer yes sir/no sir (or ma’am), do what your told, and don’t talk shit to them. No need to make value judgments, since cops are like any other group of…
I cannot believe that I am defending Bono here, but could there be an element of trying to reinforced past positive behaviour rather than challenging or attacking?
The thing I am baffled by is: why did the FBI threaten arrest? Were other passengers and/or the flight crew backing up whatever story the man who called it in said? And what was that story, since Blanco claims to have been asleep the whole time?

In that case, I look forward to reading about you beating on any Gawker media alumni, should you run into them.
I love to see the gnashing of teeth and salty tears of you hypocritical, anti-American liberals.
I never said the students were the ones who reacted violently (although it’s hard to believe that every single person who caused any damage was a non-student).
You seem like a balanced person. Please don’t punch me in the face because you don’t like my comment. Fascist.
I’m backing Maher on this one. We need to pick our battles. And we need to open a dialogue with conservatives. Especially the young ones. It wont happen if we disenfranchise them. We dont have to agree and we can still call them out on their bullshit. Ignoring them is what got us here.
I don’t watch his show often enough I guess, but how is Bill Maher a racist? Anti-religious sure, but who is he racist towards specifically?
I have an appreciation for Maher that goes back to watching politically incorrect in my teen years to listening to the podcast version of real time in the Bush Era. I truly think that he deserves a spot of recognition as one of the early challengers of right wing talk radio style media. That being said I haven’t…
Omg, this is the dumbest article I think this site has ever published. Bill Maher treated that troll like the ignorant child he is. Everyone’s like “Bill should have been tougher on him!” And legitimize his trollish famewhoring. . . why now? The kid is saying anything and everything to get fame and money. He’s locked…
No, he wasn’t greeted by protests. He was greeted by people rioting—starting fires, breaking things. It was embarrassing, even if you didn’t personally want to hear the guy speak. And that’s the point Maher was trying to make—you can’t be the side of tolerance if you’re going to react to viewpoints you don’t like by…
