Rereading my initial comment i didn’t articulate what i actually meant. I know gambling addiction is a very real problem for some people, things like slot machine apps should not exist and are extremely exploitative. People absolutely install those explicitly for the gambling experience. But, people are attracted to

All I’m saying is that there has to be an initial fun component to these games to allow the hooks to take hold. The predatory aspects definitely take over after time and that’s a problem, but there has to be something enjoyable to get to that point at all. Even if it’s something as nebulous and sketchy as emulating

As you said, this is a game where the core of the game is so strong that the flaws end up not mattering. You can skip the cutscenes. You can run past enemies without fighting (once you know the levels at least.) You can hop into time trials and ignore everything else. It’s a perfect example of a game that knows

I think the cynical naysayer gamers who hate Games as Service, gatcha, etc. forget that for any of the psychological “tricks” that keep players hooked to work, the game itself has to be fun. Players have to get something out of it before they actually consider spending money on them.

is final fantasy 7 not an rpg because the story is scripted and linear? this is just debating semantics in a really boring way

checklist maps are feeling very dated. Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima both suffered from it, but their core gameplay is a lot better than most Ubisoft games. That’s their saving grace, just be better in other ways.

the thing that sucks is that the game actually is fun and this massively disproportionate reaction is going make it harder and take longer for devs to actually push out updates and new content

they kind of have to, or another game will get you addicted instead. gotta churn out *some kind* of content every week or people pronounce the game dead and unsupported these days.

It sucks because it’s still a genuinely fun game even with the existing issues. At this point we need a new map and maybe some tweaks to existing ones (mostly new paths with cover for infantry running between points on some maps) but otherwise it’s still a good time.

There aren't any microtransactions in the game currently. They're gonna add a battlepass later, but it's all cosmetic stuff

That’s not how that works really, it takes time to onboard new hires and this NFT thing happened only a couple months before it was supposed to ship. I think the game was just waaay too buggy to launch in its current state and they just need more time.

we aren’t even close to hyperinflation right now. when a loaf of bread costs $100, you can use that term.

Even playing solo I get heals and ammo from randoms more frequently than I did in previous games. I'm a medic typically and I find I have to play very aggressive to get revives in before randoms do lol. The only teamplay element I never see is vehicle repairs, but that barely happened with randoms in any previous game

tbh this is still one of the smoothest launches Battlefield has ever had, especially on Playstation. Its buggy for sure but like, i’m level 60 something in game and have not faced on crash or disconnection from a game. All the bugs I have been hitting are addressed in that blog post, as are most of the balance issues.

Hot take: tanks are as powerful as they should be. One infantry player should not be able to solo a tank kill. People are just used to blowing up underpowered tanks in the last three games.

Though, if you have to have a postmortem after every major release, maybe those postmortems aren’t working as intended.”

This shows you don’t really know how development works. I do post-mortems after every sprint. There’s always things to improve, and having regular dedicated meetings to identify them is essential.

I bet a lot of the stuff that makes traversal easier won’t be available until late in the game.

yeah, and in three years these 1tb drives will probably cost $100 or less, while history shows proprietary memory tends to stay expensive longer.

in reality people will look up drive suggestions on digital foundry and watch a youtube tutorial, it’s not that big of a deal. it’s no more complicated than swapping drives on a PS3 or PS4.

I stand by Wet as a game that had crazy potential and was just a bit ahead of it's time mechanically. We see lots of acrobatic shooters these days from Titanfall to Ghostrunner. With a bit of more polish and a better story, it could've been a great of the era.
