I feel like Michael is one of the few names that has the ability to be shortened, but isn't always. For example, you rarely hear anybody go by "Christopher" over "Chris" or "Benjamin" over "Ben". Not sure what the "Michael" to "Mike" ratio is, but I bet it's closer than any other name with a built-in nickname.
