This whole trend recently of “Hate the game, not the player” is understandable - who doesn’t love a redemption arc, after all? - and to be fair there are no winners on any side in the kind of vapid, self-aggrandizing, vicious world in which the Paris Hiltons, Courtney Stoddens, and, indeed, Donald Trumps of this Earth…
Uh, no? I mean, personally, I think Hoop Dreams is better in every single metric but, beyond that, Hoosiers has an ugly racial subtext that makes the comparison pretty striking. Hoosiers wants to pretend that white kids in the American heartland are the underdog while Hoop Dreams explicitly shows how much the…
Nope, I went to the public school where the regionals took place.
I think it was a perfect storm for it this year. It was an extremely stylish and youthful-feeling A24 movie starring a prominent actress of color with a long and unrecognized international career, about an Asian-American family. And it was a great movie.
CODA is… yes, fine; that’s a good word. But as a member of the Deaf community (I have hearing in one ear, but I’m fluent in ASL), I can tell you many of us watched it and got the distinct feeling that the writers pitched it as “What if ‘Glee,’ but Deaf?”

Okay I gotta question this bit about The Crow:
Between this and the Boseman omission, I’m wondering if Tucker Carlson is the new AV Club editor.
You know, I don’t usually mind the A.V. Club snark, but there’s a nasty cavalier attitude threaded throughout this piece that’s just so inappropriate for the subject matter.
For the AV Club, this list must’ve been the most important day of their lives, but for Raul Julia in “Street Fighter,” it was Friday.
